Steward Brand in the 21st Century

If you know me at all you probably know I am interested in the subjects of poverty and small business. Maybe you don't recall the name Stewart Brand right away. He was one of the original greens in the USA. He founded and published "The Whole Earth Catalog." Now he is tweaking the nose of some of his old ecology buddies by going against the standard marching orders.

While I probably don't agree with most of what he says, he has an interesting perspective on entrepreneurship, poverty, energy and food. This is from a TED conference. Please check out the video and you have to watch to the 6:40 mark. Trust me the payoff is worth it.

Teen Choice Awards

Lets get this straight from the beginning. I did not watch the Teen Choice Awards. Heck, I don’t watch any Awards shows as a rule. But this one was on in our family room while I was on the computer. My daughters were watching it. It all seemed harmless enough.

There were two odd and disturbing things that caught my attention. First was Mylie Cyrus. She sang a song dressed in hot pants. That’s what we used to call very short shorts. And during the song she was dancing on a stripper pole. What is she—seventeen? Sixteen? Either way, that’s way too young. Not that a mock strip tease or a real strip tease is acceptable at any age, but at that age it is exploitation. Some adult (read: perv) suggested and taught her this dance. Where are her parents? Oh, in the audience smiling and clapping.

Next, they handed out an award for something like Mr. Fabulous. Apparently this is teens’ favorite gay guy. My older daughter thought this was disgusting too and fast forwarded past it. What is this awards show thinking? Well, I guess I know. Their world view is a slap in the face of the traditional world view I think I hold.

If I have a question about this show it is this: why no outcry or mass complaint about this content? Could everyone with a conscience be at a town hall meeting explaining why Americans don’t want socialized medicine forced upon us? Or are we just that bombarded and jaded?
