Working at Crown Books in my first grown up job, I found an appreciation for books and the knowledge they contained. After having kids I started to give up the fantasy of building a great personal library. Too much time, too much money, too much space, and too many other priorities. Now I would rather put my discretionary money into a sports or cheer camp.
My passion for books is unabated though. Now I am always reading something and listening to a book on CD while I drive alone. Talk about expense—audiobooks sell at a premium to the underlying book. And, as much as you might love the content, audio CDs are never cuddly. They don’t bring on fond memories or draw from friends on a shelf like a good book can.
So, in large part it is the library for me. I am fortunate to have three great suburban libraries right near me. Building a wish list of books to read can lead to a lot of time spent tracking down a copy. Searching various library databases can take some time. Recently, I found a solution.
Searching the web one day I stumbled upon World Cat at worldcat.org. It is a huge database of books, audios, ebooks, and articles. Its amazing. If you love books too, check it out. My two favorite things are the library search and the lists feature.
The library search shows you where the title is to be found in a local library. It is always a kick to see the closest volume can be picked up in Scotland or Australia. Oops. I picked a foreign published edition. Do over.
I recently picked up a book called “The 100 Best Business Books Ever Written.” World Cat was very helpful trying to track down recommended books I wanted to read. Check it out. You can also find out where to buy the book too.
